The next long-term support (LTS) release of Ubuntu, Ubuntu 24.04, is scheduled for release on April 25, 2024.
Launchpad, the home of Ubuntu development, list this as the final release date (although, as always, it is subject to change).
This and other important dates in the Ubuntu 24.04 development cycle include:
- February 29, 2024 : function freeze
- March 21, 2024 : UI freezing
- April 4, 2024 – Ubuntu 24.04 Beta
- April 11, 2024 – Kernel freeze
- April 25, 2024 : Ubuntu 24.04 LTS released
Most of these dates are only really relevant to those who contribute to Ubuntu (in various capacities) or are looking to test it. The April 4th beta release is the only formal testing milestone being released.
Expectations for Ubuntu 24.04
Ubuntu 24.04 ‘Noble Numbat’ será la décima versión LTS de Ubuntu realizada desde 2006.
Ubuntu LTS releases receive 5 years of security updates, bug fixes, and selected application updates, making them by far the most popular version of Ubuntu. Ubuntu Pro adds an additional 5 years of security coverage to give modern LTS releases a decade of mind-blowing support.
Unfortunately, at this point we don't know much about the new features and improvements that will be included in Ubuntu 24.04. It's likely that Noble include GNOME 46, and a new Linux kernel is a given. We should also see the first official release of a fully instant, immutable Ubuntu desktop image, which is exciting.
